Jury Selection Underway In Homeless Beating Trial

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― Pre-screening of potential jurors is underway in the Ft. Lauderdale trial of two teens accused in the beating death of a homeless man.

Thomas Daugherty, 19, and Brian Hooks, 20, are accused of attacking three Ft. Lauderdale homeless men the night of January 12th, 2006.
Beaten with baseball bats at Esplanade Park, 45-year old Norris Gaynor died of his injuries.

Surveillance video allegedly captured Daughtery, Hooks and a third teen attacking 60-year old Jacques Pierre outside Florida Atlantic University. Raymond Perez, 51, was assaulted outside the Church by the Sea. Both Pierre and Perez were hospitalized for broken bones and lacerations after their attacks.

The trial of Hooks and Daugherty is tentatively scheduled to begin August 25th and last for approximately six weeks. If convicted, both face life in prison.

The third teen, William Ammons, accepted a plea deal last week in exchange for his testimony against Daughtery and Hooks. Ammons, now 20, faces 10 to 20 years in prison when he's sentenced on August 20th.
