A homeless newspaper vendor in Davie is being called a hero after he rescued a woman from a canal.
61-year old John Beauchamp was on his regular corner Sunday when he spotted 49-year-old Mauvlyn Rose Lewin struggling to stay afloat in a canal off Pine Island Road and I-595.
Beauchamp called out to the woman to hang on as he scrambled down the embankment, swam out to the woman and then dragged her ashore.
"I grabbed her by her wrist and I started swimming," Beauchamp told CBS4's Joan Murray.
By then, paramedics had arrived and took her to Westside Hospital where she was listed in stable condition.
Lewin had been reported missing after wandering away from her family Saturday afternoon. She suffers from dementia. She cannot recognize people or places.
Battalion chief for Davie Fire-Rescue Jorge Gonzalez says it was very heroic of Beauchamp.
Delroy Lewin, the victim's husband gave Beauchamp some money and said he would like to help him get out of the homeless shelter. He also told him he is always welcome to his house.
