A South Florida group has come out in full support of the new leader of Honduras after a military coup removed democratically elected President Manual Zelaya from office.
The military removed Zelaya from office over fears that he would not step down when his term expires in January. They warned that if Zelaya, who is currently in exile in Costa Rica, returns he would be arrested and face trial.
Zelaya's successor, Congressional President Roberto Micheletti, has been sworn in as Honduras' new president.
In Miami, the Honduran Unity Organization has asked all Hondurans in South Florida to get behind and show their support from Micheletti.
"We are calling on Hondurans to remain calm. We are calling to support President Roberto Micheletti and to allow him to govern accordingly. He has called for elections, as had been called for by the tribunal of elections, for November 29th," said Honduran activist Jose Lagos.
Not everyone shares Lagos support for Micheletti's presidency. The U.S. had condemned Zelaya's removal from power and leaders from across Latin America are discussing ways to re-instate him. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has threatened to overthrow Micheletti if Zelaya is not returned to power.
Micheletti has asked that his nation be left in peace.
