Infant, Boy Saved From Burning Miami Gardens Home

MIAMI GARDENS (CBS4) ― A 5-month old infant and a 2-year old boy were rushed to the hospital early Monday morning to be treated for smoke inhalation after the home she was sleeping in went up in flames.

More than 30 firefighters battled the fire that gutted the Miami Gardens home at 17930 Northwest 42nd Court.

More than a dozen people, 6 adults and 8 children, were inside the home when the fire started.

Firefighters had to rescue several people who became trapped when they couldn't open the security bars on home's windows and found themselves surrounded by walls of flame.

"We had to remove ornamental bars, while other fire crews were protecting those companies, keeping charge of those lines," said Eddy Ballester with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. "Ultimately we breached the window; we gained access into a bedroom; and were able to save a little infant that was left behind, unable to exit the home."

Mary Moore, who called 911, said if her husband didn't wake up, it could have been much worse.

"He had to go to the bathroom and he happened to look out there," said Moore. "And the flames were really indescribable, like I said I'm just happy that everybody is safe."

The cause of the fire, which started in the home's laundry room, is under investigation.

The Red Cross has assisted the family members in finding a temporary place to stay.
