Some South Florida seniors have a new option when it comes to finding affordable housing, even on an ever-shrinking budget.
When her three-bedroom home became too much, Mari Ann Nicholson started looking for alternatives. After suffering two debilitating falls, family members steered her to Highland Gardens, just north of Sample road in Deerfield Beach.
"I didn't expect it," Nicholson told
CBS4 Reporter Joan Murray. "When I came out of the hospital, they said 'Mom, we have a nice apartment. Brand new and we want you to move there.'"
On Social Security, Nicholson is able to afford the $695 per month rent. Highland Gardens helps seniors like Nicholson financially through a joint partnership between the Broward County Housing Authority and Pinnacle Housing Group.
"You feel safe here. It's comfortable and congenial. This is a new experience for me. I hadn't been in an apartment since we were in college," Nicholson laughed.
Bernie Davis recently moved in and says he enjoys the independence. "I was living with my son in Deerfield Beach. He's got a house there and he's moving, too. So I wanted to get out of the way of the kids.
Highland Gardens is about half-filled. They are still looking for new renters. Highland Gardens is strictly for people 55 and older who have an income of under $35-thousand a year.
