Crist Emphasizes Hurricane Preparedness

FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― The 22nd Annual Governor's Hurricane Conference continued in Fort Lauderdale with an appearance by Governor Crist. He helped push the message of preparedness.

Hurricane experts and emergency management personnel are concerned Florida residents may have let their guard down after two relatively weak hurricane seasons.

Florida emergency management chief Craig Fugate echoed Governor Crist's message saying it wasn't a question of if, but when another storm will hit. Fugate said people are often labeled as victims, when instead they should be called survivors. He also said residents should be prepared to survive alone for a couple of days after a storm is critical.

Almost 3,000 people attended today's events. Hurricane season begins on June 1 and runs through November.
