Marathon Residents Prepared To Ride Out Ike

MARATHON (CBS4) ― Despite the threat of Hurricane Ike, the Island Fish Company was open for lunch as usual on Monday. Many residents decided to stay behind, despite a mandatory evacuation order, and are busy going about everyday life.

Resident Daniel Saus is acting as though there isn't a threat. "We were at work this morning. Now we're at lunch and we're going back to work. Life goes on."

While some people are out and about, however, most have decided to stay in. As the work week gets underway, most businesses are closed. Even City Hall is down, and there is no school.

The last buses carrying evacuees from Key West are making their way north to Miami. They stopped in Marathon to pick up anybody seeking safer ground, but nobody got on.

Those sticking around feel they'll be alright as the storm passes through;  they'll keep an eye on the news, just to be sure Ike doesn't pull any surprises.

"Luckily, we get so much notice, it's wonderful. It it's tornadoes in between my movies… you don't know when, so I'll look at it," explained resident June Probinsky.

Now, boats are tied down tight in preparation for Ike. The hatches are battened down, just in time for the first bands of wind and rain to roll in, but hopefully Ike will bring the keys nothing more than tropical storm effects.
