Communication Is Key For Hurricane Season Preps
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ―
With the start of the 2009 Atlantic Hurricane Season less than three weeks away, getting the word out is a primary focus for state's Division of Emergency Management.
The department's new interim chief, Ruben Almaguer, says every year thousands move out of the state, while thousands more move. Add in all the tourists and it can be tough to get everyone thinking about being prepared.
"For as much as we will talk to the media and reach out and through interactive ways and technology that talk to everybody about preparedness, I would say we will never be able to reach 18 million people for some reason. So, we have to improve the way we actually get our messages out," Almaguer told those gathered at the Governor's Hurricane Conference going on Fort Lauderdale.
In an effort to reach even more people this year, Almaguer said his agency will be sending out press releases in Spanish, English and Creole to reach out to the Hispanic and Haitian communities. They've also launched a new website for children which will teach them about hurricane season and how to make their own disaster kit.
