Professor Predicts Average Hurricane Season

RALEIGH, NC (CBS4) ― Just days after Colorado State University's hurricane team issued a prediction for an average hurricane season; North Carolina State University professor Lian Xie said he also believes the Atlantic hurricane season will be average.

Xie forecasted there will be 11 to 14 named storms during the season in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea. Of those storms, six to eight may become hurricanes.

Xie's team estimated there is a 45 percent chance of a hurricane hitting the southeastern U.S. coast and a 40 percent chance of a major hurricane hitting the Gulf Coast.

Dr. Gray's team estimated 12 named storms with six of them becoming hurricanes. In 2008, there were 16 named storms.
