State: No Sales Tax Holiday For Hurricane Supplies
State Did Approve A School Supplies Tax-Break
School Supply Tax Holiday Shorted To 7-Days
It Used To Be 10-Days
TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ―
If you thought you might save a little money shopping for hurricane supplies this year during the state's annual sales tax holiday, you'd better think again.
A spokeswoman for the Senate says legislators working on this year's budget have agreed to skip the tax-free holiday for hurricane supplies.
Cutting the program will save the state an estimated 12 million dollars in this tight budget year. In recent years, the holiday has been held in late May, right before the beginning of hurricane season.
Senate spokeswoman Kathy Mears says while getting rid of the hurricane holiday, lawmakers did agree on a shortened, seven-day sales tax holiday for school supplies.
The holiday, which lasted ten days last year, will cost the state an estimated 23 million dollars.
Books will be excluded this year from the tax-exempt items. The holiday would apply to backpacks, clothing and shoes costing $50 or less and school supplies costing $10 or less.
