The Category 1 storm was moving northwest through Cuba on Tuesday, though the storm's outer bands brought heavy downpours and brisk winds to Islamorada, where minor flooding has been reported at Mile Marker 75 on the Overseas Highway.
Cautious optimism reached residents as the hurricane moved ever-farther south and officials said the Lower Keys will be spared severe weather.
Due to water and debris, the overseas Highway at mile marker 75 was impassable.
Jessica Gilmore of Islamorada went outside during a moment of calm. She told CBS4 Reporter Sharrie Williams, "It's not that bad when we got here - it wasn't rainy or windy." But moments later, the stormed came crashing back again.
At the Safari Lounge, a few locals gathered to share their not-so pleasant Ike stories. Teana Stearn received a rude awakening in the early morning hours. She said, "I woke up to having to move our bed on the other side of the bedroom because it was leaking all over."
79-year-old Monczi Beatty said Ike is to blame for her horror story - her cat "Sassy" has still not returned since the storm began.
Residents who evacuated were urged not to return until after the possibility of tropical storm winds has ended, which should be by Wednesday morning.
