Dozens Rally In Support Of Israel
FORT LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ―
Ft. Lauderdale police closed off streets and be prepared for the worst
as pro-Israel supporters attended a "Rally For Israel To Destroy Hamas"
at 5 p.m. in front of the Federal Courthouse. Police say the street
closures impacted the afternoon rush hour traffic as workers left the
downtown area.
At 4 p.m., Northeast 3rd Avenue was shutdown from Broward Boulevard to 2nd Street. The rally was vocal, but peaceful. Police were out in full force after last Sunday, when violence broke out during a rally in Miami.
Thousands of Palestinian supporters lined one side of Biscayne Boulevard and thousands of supporters of Israel lined the other. At times, their chants evolved into physical altercations; that is when police stepped in, slamming some protestors to the ground and hauling them away in handcuffs. A dozen people were arrested.
All that followed an earlier rally in Miami Beach in front of the holocaust memorial. Both sides were also represented in large numbers there as well. The idea behind both events was to raise awareness of Israeli invasion into Gaza and the lives lost during the conflict.
