Hundreds To Attend 2 Pro-Israel Rallies Sunday

As Israeli troops and Palestinian gunmen continue to engage in one of the fiercest ground battles so far of Israel's Gaza offensive, a pair of rallies will be held in South Florida on Sunday in support of Israel.

In Davie, U.S. House Representative Robert Wexler will headline an Israel Solidarity Rally.

Sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Broward Cound and the Broward County Board of Rabbis, the rally will begin at 3 p.m. at the David Posnack Jewish Community Center at 5850 South Pine Island Road.

Other speakers will include Rabbi Cheryl Jacobs, President of the Broward County Board of Rabbis; Ofer Bavly, Consul General of Israel to Florida and Puerto Rico; Elissa Mogilefsky, Chairwoman of the Federation's Community Relations Committee and Israeli Defense Forces Commander Yitav Mazor.

U.S. Representatives Ron Klein and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz are also scheduled to attend.

At 4 p.m., an Israel Solidarity Rally will be held at the Holocaust Memorial in Miami Beach. The rally is expected to draw residents from more than 65 religious and community organizations to express their support for the people of Israel during this critical time.

The Holocaust Memorial is located at 1933-1945 Meridian Avenue in Miami Beach.

Among those scheduled to address the gathering is U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

"Hamas militants expressly deny Israel's right of existence. These Islamist extremists, with the support of their state sponsors, have launched thousands of rockets and mortars against Israel since 2001. Their goal is the complete destruction of the Jewish state," said Ros-Lehtinen.

Ros-Lehtinen, the ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, co-authored House Resolution 34 which recognizes Israel's right to defend itself against attacks from Gaza, reaffirming the United States strong support for Israel, and supporting the Israeli-Palestinian peace process. The resolution was passed overwhelmingly by the House of Representatives on Friday.

The rally is being organized by the Greater Miami Jewish Federation and its Jewish Community Relations Council, the Rabbinical Association of Greater Miami and the Anti-Defamation League.
