Leyritz Arrested For Alleged Domestic Battery

DAVIE (CBS4) ― Former New York Yankees star Jim Leyritz sits in a Broward jail Thursday morning after his ex-wife says he hit her during a dispute at their Davie home early Thursday.

Leyritz is already awaiting trial on charges that he was driving drunk when he hit and killed Fredia Veitch late last year. Now his lawyer is scrambling to get him out of jail in a domestic battery case that Davie police said offered conflicting details about exactly what happened.

Karrie Leyritz spoke to CBS4 News and said, "It was a dispute. That is all I can say. People need to realize all families have their issues."

A police report says Karrie Leyritz claims her ex-husband became upset over a check she had written and confronted her in the home the two are still sharing with their three children.

She told police he hit her in the face in the home's foyer. Later, police noted, she said he'd hit her in the bedroom. The police report also says she had been drinking and one of her children suggested she might have hit herself.

Jim Leyritz told police his ex-wife was angry that he was moving to evict her from the home and he denied striking her. Karrie Leyritz told us, "Unfortunately our (situation) is under the magnifying glass. I am the one being scrutinized this time, so it is the first time for me and I don't like it at all."

The lawyer for Jim Leyritz says he is hopeful—given the discrepancies in the police report—that he can soon have his client freed from jail as he continues to await trial.
