Union Prez Warns Teachers Away From Miami Dade
UTD's Karen Aronowitz Addressed 3,000 Teacher Delegates
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
The president of the union which represents teachers in Miami Dade is warning teachers away from the county at least for now.
In an address to more than 3-thousand teacher delegates at the American Federation of Teachers' biennial convention in Chicago, United Teachers of Dade President Karen Aronowitz said any teacher or education major who was considering a career in Miami Dade to "stay away" until the salary dispute is resolved.
Aronowitz said considering salary and healthcare cuts, along with contract violations, Miami Dade may not be the best place to launch a teaching career.
"For teachers who want to come to Miami Dade they have to know that they are going to have their negotiated salaries honored, that they are going to receive the insurance that they are going to depend upon and that conditions for them are going to such that they are able to do the job that they were asked to do," said Aronowitz.
To press her point Aronowitz handed out stickers that read "Stay Away from Miami-Dade County Public Schools." She said she hopes parents in Miami Dade will continue to support their teachers by contacting the school board for a resolution in their latest negotiations.
