Fight Leads To Stabbing During Key's Fantasy Fest
KEY WEST (CBS4) ―
Key West's Fantasy Fest is known for drawing tens of thousands of revelers to its 10-day street party, but a fatal stabbing in the predawn hours Saturday has tarnished the event.
During its 30-year history, the festival had never had to investigate a homicide until Saturday, according to the Key West Citizen newspaper.
The stabbing occurred at 4 a.m. and involved two groups of people, Key West police spokeswoman Alyson Crean said in a statement Saturday afternoon.
"In the 30 years of Fantasy Fest we've never had a homicide," Crean told the Citizen. "In fact, this is the first homicide to occur in Key West, at any time, in several years."
One group of Key West residents apparently got into an altercation with a group of out-of-towners, police said.
In the end, 23-year-old Marques Butler was stabbed on Duval and Caroline streets. He later died at the Lower Keys Medical Center after undergoing surgery.
Butler's death is considered a homicide and police continue to their investigation.
Authorities are questioning a 23-year-old Fort Lauderdale man in connection with the stabbing.
CBS4.com spoke to at least one hotel employee who works on the same street as where the alleged stabbing occurred. The worker said he had not heard about the stabbing, and besides, he added, he was too busy tending to partygoers Saturday afternoon.
