Three Krome Inmates Test Positive For H1N1
West Miami-Dade (CBS4) ―
All social visits to Krome Detention Center are suspended through the weekend after three inmates tested positive for the H1N1 flu, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Nicole Navas.
On Monday, 16 detainees complained of flu-like symptoms. Of the 16 detainees, three have tested positive for the H1N1 flu. They have all been treated with anti-virals.
"We're allowing detainees to meet with their attorneys in non-contact settings," Navas said.
The 16 inmates have been isolated to prevent the pandemic from infecting the more than 500 inmates detained in the West Miami-Dade immigration detention center.
"We're just trying to take as much precautionary measures to ensure that all inmates, visitors and personnel are at minimal exposure," Navas said.
The Miami-Dade Health Department has said it won't declare an emergency or request a quarantine. The department also lacks the authority to keep inmates detained past their release date.
By Thursday, Miami-Dade had 111 confirmed H1N1 cases and Broward had 67. There are 247 confirmed cases in Florida.
