Lauderhill Walk-A-Thon Aims To 'Stomp Out Hate'
LAUDERHILL (CBS4) ―
Hoping to make their mark against bigotry and racism, dozens turned out in Broward County Sunday for a walk-a-thon to "Stomp Out Hate."
The idea stemmed from a trip 10 Broward students took to an Anti-Defamation League youth mission in Washington, D.C. last year.
The students were selected to take part in the program that advocates fighting bigotry.
Gina Cherelus was among those who participated in the student delegation.
"We met with Holocaust survivors, Darfur speakers. We met with people who had problems with racism or discrimination," Cherelus said. "It really changed the way I look at people and it changed myself because now I can like watch what I say and I just think about how someone else would feel in that situation."
Another student, Florencia Schwarz, expressed her experience as a foreigner entering the school system.
"When I first came to the U.S., I lived in Orlando and there I was, the only one who had a Spanish accent," Shwarc said.
Shwarz said she would often cry to her parents about how others would make fun of her.
Organizers said the walk-a-thon was timely because of recent events that have made headline news.
"A few weeks ago, the Coral Springs Jewish Community Center was vandalized with nasty graffiti swastikas, slurs against Jews. It's a place that children come to and so it touched everyone in the community," said Yael Hershfield, associate regional director of Florida's Anti-Defamation League.
CBS4's Tiffani Helberg contributed to this report.
