As Velma Foster watched fireworks from the backyard of a friend's home in Lauderhill Saturday night she heard a pop.
But the sound wasn't from a firecracker. It was a gunshot. The bullet struck her upper right thigh and doctors told her it will remain with her for life.
"I heard a pop and felt a burning sensation," Foster said. "I said, 'Oh my God I'm gonna die.' The lady next to me said, 'You're bleeding, you've been shot,' " said Foster.
The bullet remains lodged in her thigh. Surgeons told her it's too close to an artery to remove. But Foster says she wants another opinion. She doesn't want to live with a bullet in her leg. And she has a message for others who would shoot guns on holidays.
"Stop this, it's serious. You can hurt yourself or a relative. Luckily, I've lived to tell my story," she said.
It happend at 35 hundred block of NW 14 Ct in Lauderhill. The name of the residential town house community is Georgetown.
The owner of the home where it happened tells
CBS4 News Reporter Joan Murray that authorities believe the shooter was standing at the Central Broward Regional Park.
She asked not to be identified but says she's angry at the carelessness since she has a 1-year-old child who was sitting on her lap.
Neighbor George Folks said the bullet could have hit any number of children who were out Saturday night.
"It's bad," Folks said. "You're out watching fireworks and this happens. It's a shame."
Foster, the 54-year-old victim, told Lauderhill Fire Rescue officials during a phone conversation Sunday that she was discharged from the hospital with the bullet still lodged in her leg. According to the victim, the doctors are going to leave the bullet in place because they feel that it does not pose any further harm.
