Lauderhill Baby Rescued From Burning Home
LAUDERHILL (CBS4) ―
A Lauderhill baby is clinging to life after a smoky kitchen fire.
Lauderhill Fire Rescue received a call around 2:40 a.m. Sunday from a person who said a house was on fire and they were going to see if they could rescue an infant that was trapped inside the home.
When firefighters arrived at 550 Northwest 35th Terrace, they saw heavy smoke billowing from the front of the house. Neighbors then frantically told them that there was a baby trapped in the front bedroom of the home.
Entering the house, firefighters used high pressure water hoses to put out the flames as others searched the home for the infant. A short time later they found the 10-month girl in a front bedroom; she wasn't breathing.
Rescue workers performed CPR on the child who was taken to Plantation General Hospital. The child, who was put on a ventilator in critical but stable condition, was then rushed to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami for more advanced care.
In the house at the time of fire, in addition to the infant, were an adult female and two young girls, ages 1 and 10. All three were taken to Broward General Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale for smoke inhalation, they are in stable condition.
According to the woman, she was cooking on the stove and left something burning and fell asleep. The ten year old female awoke to find the house full of smoke, and the kitchen on fire. She then ran to a neighbor's house to call 911, because they did not have a phone in the house. The neighbor then ran over and was able to get the 1 year old out of the house. When they tried to go back in to get the 10 month old, the smoke was too heavy.
Lauderhill Fire Rescue said there were no smoke detectors in the house.
The American Red Cross was called to the scene, because the house is uninhabitable due to the fire and smoke damage. The fire damage was contained to the kitchen and living room, but the entire house had smoke in it from ceiling to floor.
