Fla. Enacts New, Costly Speeding Laws

TALLAHASSEE (AP) ― Watch your speed the next time you're on the road and in a hurry. Under a new Florida law that took effect in October, drivers can be fined more than $1,000 for being caught driving 50 miles-per-hour faster than the speed limit.

Drivers caught speeding that fast a second time will lose their license for a year and have to shell out more than $2,500. A third infraction will cost drivers $5,000 and their license for ten years.

Before this law, the harshest fine was $250 for breaking the speed limit by more than 30 miles-per-hour. That law is still in effect.

Motorcycle riders have additional new laws, including a ban on "popping wheelies", or lifting their front wheel off the pavement while driving.
