Mail Carrier Saves A Broward Life

Elderly Man Found Lying In His Condo Saved By Carrier's Attentiveness

MARGATE (CBS4) ― Working his regular route, Margate letter carrier Frank DeYoung noticed something peculiar – one of his customers had not picked up his mail for two days.

It happened August 22nd as his regular customer, Steve Wendell, wasn't there to greet him, though his car was still in its parking spot.

The office manager was alerted there might be reason to open his door.

Manager Dorothy Rudy told CBS4 Reporter Joan Murray that she found Wendell on the bathroom floor.

"You could see where he had scratched and clawed at the mirror, and I reached for a pulse and then called 911," she added.

Lying on the floor in a semi-conscious state, emergency workers were called and brought Wendell to Northwest Medical Center in Margate, where he is recuperating.

Post Office station manager Jim LaFaman said, " I told him what he did was a heroic act.  He had the presence of mind to act on something he saw was inconsistent."

In fourteen years delivering mail, DeYoung never expected saving a life would be among the slogans used in his vocation of working in 'rain, sleet, and snow'.
