Retrial In Liberty City 7 Delayed
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Jury selection in Miami terrorism conspiracy retrial of 6 men has been delayed because of an undisclosed family emergency involving one of the defense lawyers.
U.S. District Judge Joan Lenard agreed to postpone the start of juror questioning at the request of Ana Jhones, attorney for the group's alleged ringleader. Lenard set a hearing for Wednesday to determine when the case can go forward.
A small group of of the suspects' supporters stood outside the courthouse Monday, pushing for their release from jail.
The first trial ended last month in an acquittal of one of the men and a hung jury for the remaining defendants who are accused of plotting to destroy the Sears Tower in Chicago and bomb several FBI offices including one in Miami.
Prosecutors claim the group made contact with a paid FBI informant who posed as an al-Qaida emissary and swore allegiance to al-Qaida. However, they never obtained any of the weaponry needed to carry out the alleged attacks.
Jury selection is expected to take at least two weeks.
