Defense Begins Case In "Liberty City 6" Re-Trial
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Defense attorneys for six Miami men accused of plotting to destroy Chicago's Sears Tower and bomb several FBI offices will begin their case on Thursday.
Federal prosecutors rested their case on Wednesday after about a month of testimony in the retrial of the so-called "Liberty City Seven" case.
Tuesday their star witness, a paid FBI informant, testified that the group was committed to carrying out the attacks and the FBI did not entrap them. Elie Assad said after a series of meetings with alleged ringleader Narseal Batiste, he had no doubt the group planned to move forward with their plans.
The defense plans to argue that the meetings were orchestrated by the FBI and the men were merely trying con Assad out of $50-thousand that he said would be coming from Osama Bin Laden.
Last December, the original proceedings ended in a mistrial for six of the men; the jury acquitted the seventh man of any wrongdoing.
If convicted on the four terrorism related charges, the six men face up to 70 years in prison.
