Still outraged a week after two teenagers were shot dead and seven others were injured, politicians and law enforcement officers handed out pre-paid postcards to the residents of Liberty City. The postcards provide instructions on how to mail information to police to help find a killer.
While police search for clues, community leaders search for peace. Politicians such as Miami-Dade Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson handed out prepaid postage cards to residents to help capture violent criminals anonymously.
She told CBS4, "If this is a way that we can help find the shooters, then I'm willing to walk the streets."
Commander Bernard Johnson of the City of Miami police department emphasized the success of the program: mailing information could lead to suspects being arrested while alleviating the burden of anyone being identified in handing over such tips.
The reward in the Liberty City shooting has pledges of up to $50,000 for the apprehension of the person who opened fire with an assault rifle on a crowd of people in front of a store on the corner of NW 71st Street and 15th Avenue
Brandon Mills, 16, and 18-year-old Derrick Gloster died.
Miami police said so far they do not have enough information to put out a description of the shooter. Witnesses told police the gunman wore a bandana over his face and sprayed the crowd with bullets.
"We know for a fact that there were people out there who saw what happened Friday night and we need for those good people to come forward," said Miami Police Chief Timoney. "I can understand some people are afraid for retaliation purposes, but we guarantee you anonymity."
