Jury Selection Underway, Liberty City 7 Re-Trial
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
After nearly a two week delay due to a family emergency involving one of the defense lawyers, jury selection resumed Tuesday in the retrial of six of the so-called Liberty City 7.
Last month the first trial ended in the acquittal of one man, but a hung jury for the remaining six defendants.
Jury selection is likely to take several weeks with special
attention paid to how much prospective jurors know about the
heavily publicized case. The jurors' identities will be kept secret
and they will be driven to and from the courthouse by federal
marshals.
Prosecutors claim the group made contact with a paid FBI informant who posed as an al-Qaida emissary and swore allegiance to al-Qaida. However, they never obtained any of the weaponry needed to carry out the alleged attacks.
The defense has argued that this was a case of entrapment and that the group was enticed by a government snitch and went along only to con him out of money he promised would be coming from Osama Bin Laden.
