How To Get Luscious Lips

MIAMI (CBS4) ― In the last 10 years, the number of cosmetic procedures performed in the United States has increased 457% according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Among the most common of those procedures is lip injections.

CBS4 Health Specialist Dr. Sean Kenniff pays lip service to this popular treatment.

Most women and men for that matter long for the luscious lips of Angelina Jolie. Getting a plumper pout is possible just ask Audra Saddler.

"The top lip was kind of smaller than the bottom one and so I kind of wanted to even it out," said Saddler.

Plastic Surgeon Roberto Palma says our lips change as we age.

"Think of a grape turning into a raisin because as it loses bulk it wrinkles. But it's really not the wrinkles perse that make the lips look old," said Palma.

The youthful lip is recreated by adding bulk to the lips of women and men. The number of cosmetic procedures on men was up 17% last year.

Overall more than 1.448 million hyaluronic treatments were performed according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Hyaluronic acid is the lip treatment of choice.

"Restylane and Juvederm are hyaluronic acids and they're really the only things that I think are appropriate to use around the lips," said Palma.

According to Palma, most patients have no side effects. Some experience minimal swelling.

To avoid abnormally large lips proper placement of the filler is key.

"She had lost the border of the lower lip what we call the wide roll and the border has been recreated primarily in the central area. If you recreate it on the outside again that creates an abnormal look. I think the most common mistake in Caucasian women is to make the upper lip as big as the lower lip," said Palma.

No mistakes for Saddler who says her new lips have her smiling all the time.

"I feel happy when I wake up and I can't wait to go to work to show off my lips," said Saddler.

Palma says these fillers can cost anywhere from $400 to $800 each syringe. Most patients need one or two syringes for the best results.
