Class Ring Returned 56 Years After Being Lost

The graduation ring was lost in the 1950's.

VALLEY, Wash. (CBS4) ― An unlikely story ended on Thursday with a class ring lost in the 1950's in Key Biscayne being reunited with its owner. The Georgia Tech class of 1952 graduation ring was found in May and finally returned to the owner, 78-year-old David Perry, who now lives in Washington state.

The story began in 1954 when Perry said, "The ring slipped off my finger into the water. There it went. There went my heart with it because the ring meant an awful lot to me."  It went down in seven-feet of water in Crandon Park when he was waterskiing with friends."

Perry went on to a successful career as both a Naval Reserve captain and aerospace engineering manager throughout the next five decades.

In May, Jorge Balmori, a 54-year-old Broward high school teacher, and his son Jorge found the ring in Key Biscayne. Jorge and his son then spent a great deal of time finding the college ring's owner using countless leads some of which went nowhere.  It was much easier, they recalled, locating the ring with the assistance of their metal detector.

Through steadfastness, Perry was finally found with the help of his former college fraternity, Sigma Chi Fraternity of Georgia Tech.
