House Speaker Moves To Block Gambling Deal

TALLAHASSEE (CBS4) ― The Speaker of Florida's House has asked the Florida Supreme Court to block the governor's deal with the Seminole Indians for expanded gambling on tribal property.

Miami Representative Marco Rubio asked the justices Monday to invalidate the agreement unless it's approved by the Legislature. Governor Charlie Crist contends legislative approval isn't required.

Last week, Crist signed the 25-year pact with the tribe which included a minimum $100-million annual payment to the state in exchange for adding Las Vegas-style slot machines and card games such as blackjack at the tribe's seven gambling facilities.

Federal officials had said that the Seminoles are at a competitive disadvantage because of the recent addition of slots at dog and horse tracks and jai alai frontons in Broward County.
