Two and a half million dollars worth of marijuana will not make it to the streets of South Florida or anywhere else for that matter thanks to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Crewmembers from the Coast Guard Cutter Dolphin discovered 115 bricks of marijuana, nearly 1,250 pounds, on board a 29-foot U.S. flagged, white-hulled vessel traveling from Bimini, Bahamas earlier this month.
The drugs were offloaded at Coast Guard Sector Miami on June 13th.
The Dolphin crew boarded the vessel to conduct an initial safety inspection and made a plain view discovery of nearly 1,250 pounds of marijuana worth an estimated street value of $2.5 million.
"This is the first drug bust for the crew of the Dolphin and we are ecstatic to keep nearly 1,250 pounds of marijuana off the streets," said Lt. Peter Lang, Dolphin's commanding officer. "I am extremely proud of what this crew has accomplished."
The two suspected smugglers were detained and taken aboard the Dolphin and later transferred to U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents. The vessel and the marijuana were transferred to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in Miami.
Coast Guard Cutter Dolphin is an 87-foot coastal patrol boat based in Miami.
