MIAMI (CBS4) ―

The Florida Marlins announced on Saturday at the location from where the Orange Bowl once stood, that shortstop Hanley Ramirez signed a six-year, $70-million contract extension.

Ramirez, 24, is making $439,000 this season. The deal is the richest in Marlins history. Ramirez becomes the first Florida player since the 2005 season to receive a multiyear contract.

Marlins owner Loria also said he plans to break ground on the team's new ballpark in November or December at the site of today's announcement.

Ramirez, raised in the Dominican Republic, was named the National League Rookie of the Year in 2006. He followed that up by batting .332 with 29 home runs and a franchise-record 125 runs scored in 2007.
