Miami Dolphins outside linebacker Matt Roth is expected to begin practicing with the Dolphins for the first time during the regular season this week, according to CBS4 news partner the Miami Herald. Roth failed his physical at the start of training camp and has been on the Physically Unable to Perform, or PUP, list since the beginning of the season.
Roth's absence opened the door for Dolphins legend Jason Taylor to start at outside linebacker and Taylor has performed well in the role. Roth was more of a run-stuffer when he played outside backer in 2008, and if he resumes that role, Taylor may become a third-down pass rushing specialist. Or, Roth could be worked into a rotation of linebackers along with Taylor, Joey Porter, and Cameron Wake.
Around the LeagueThe New York Jets confirmed the worst for massive defensive tackle Kris Jenkins. The 6'4" 360lb nose tackle tore his ACL during the Jets loss to the Bills late Sunday evening. Jenkins' role on the nose leaves a massive hole in the Jets run defense, which could spell trouble in the AFC East.
Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher denied that he was coaching in "survival mode." Fisher's job is in question after the Titans were demolished by the New England Patriots, 59-0. Several Titans players appeared to quit playing as the game wound down.
Fisher has to decide during the team's bye week whether or not to insert backup quarterback Vince Young into the lineup. If Young doesn't play in the next game, the Titans are likely done with him in any starting capacity.
Josh Cribbs, who was rumored to be on the trading block, saw his role increase for the Cleveland Browns during the last game. Cribbs, who was a college quarterback at Kent State, lined up in Wildcat formations. He ran the ball six times, threw twice and handed off a few other times. Given Cleveland's horrendous quarterback play, Cribbs may get more playing time as the weeks go on.
Things don't get any easier for the Giants after seeing their vaunted defense shredded in New Orleans. This week, the Arizona Cardinals with wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald and quarterback Kurt Warner will challenge the Giants depleted secondary. If the Giants don't get a solid pass rush, Warner will likely feast on the G-men just like Saints quarterback Drew Brees did.
Mike Shanahan, last seen after being fired by the Denver Broncos, has been rumored to be the next Redskins coach after the current season. According to multiple reports, Shanahan has been approached by Redskins owner Dan Snyder about taking over the Skins franchise now, but Shanahan has rebuffed Snyder saying there's not much he could do with the team mid-season. If Shanahan does take over for the 2010 campaign, it likely means that Vinny Cerrato will lose his job making personnel decisions for the Skins.
The Kansas City Chiefs rode kicker Ryan Succop to victory over the Skins on Sunday. If Succop's name sounds familiar, don't be surprised, he was South Carolina's place kicker for several years and was also Mr. Irrelevant at the 2009 NFL Draft. The title of Mr. Irrelevant is given annually to the last player selected during the draft. Needless to say, the Chiefs are happy with their investment on the seventh round pick.
Finally, here are your top five and bottom five teams in the league through week six.
1. New Orleans Saints They physically dominated the Giants in every phase of the game.
2. New England Patriots Are they that good, or are the Titans that bad?
3. Denver Broncos There hasn't been a better second half team this year than Denver.
4. Minnesota Vikings They are solid, but one injury away from being average.
5. Indianapolis Colts Two words. Peyton Manning. Enough said.
And at the bottom of the league.
32. Tennessee Titans Congratulations on one of the worst beatings since the AFL-NFL merger
31. St. Louis Rams Hard to believe they were once the Greatest Show On Turf.
30. Tampa Bay Buccaneers Welcome back Yucs. The league missed you!
29. Cleveland Browns The quarterback has completed only 9 more passes than you did in the past two weeks.
28. Oakland Raiders Being a Philadelphia Eagle this week is almost as bad as being a Titan.
