The director of the Boy Scouts of America's Monroe chapter is lobbying the county and the federal government to change the name of West Summerland Key in the lower Florida Keys.
First of all, as Matthew Vercher points out, at Mile Marker 34 West Summerland Key is actually east of Summerland Key. Secondly, Vercher would like the new name to reflect the island's history with the scouts; it is home to two separate but adjoining scout camps. The new name that he thinks would be perfect is Scout Key.
Last week, the Monroe County Commission agreed with Vercher and on Wednesday voted 3-2 to change the name of the island to Scout Key. The next stop for Vercher will be the U.S. Board on Geographic Names which is responsible for assigning geographic names.
