Pricey Mattresses Could Be Key To Comfort

MIAMI (CBS4) ― A good mattress plays an important part in a restful night's sleep. These days there are plenty of pricey mattresses promising to keep you from having to count sheep, but are you getting your money's worth?

When it comes to shopping for a new mattress for most people comfort is key.

"I have some problems with the disc in my back and I need a good mattress so that I'm not in pain and waking up in the middle of the night," said consumer Sandra Paytin-Firth.

Firth is hoping the foam mattress she bought can help her sleep a little better at night. She says the extra money is worth paying for the extra comfort.

"It's very important to get a higher end mattress because, it makes your time sleeping and resting much more comfortable," said Firth.

CEO of Relax the Back, Ernest Jordan agrees, saying it comes down to pressure versus suspension.

"The difference is the spring is a counter pressure thing, it pushes against you to hold you as it stabilizes, where as a foam bed, is like water, you're floating in it," Jordan told CBS4's Sean Kenniff. "It suspends you in your contours, there's no pushing onto you."

However, Jordan admits there can be sticker shock.

The average spring coil mattress costs $600 with Tempur-Pedics starting at around $2,000.

Then there's "The Grand Bed" by Tempur-Pedic that can set you back about $600.

"You get what you pay for in life, and I think that's true with almost anything," said Dr. Laurence A. Smolley of the Cleveland Clinic.

Laurence says it's money well spent.

"My personal opinion is that a person should buy the highest quality mattress that he or she could afford, that he or she is comfortable with," said Laurence.

Jordan tells his customers to think about another investment they make.

"Your car, where you may spend 30 to 50 thousand dollars, you're in it an hour a day, that's the average.  You sleep 8 hours a day," explained Jordan. "That's about 2,500 hours a year versus 365 hours a year."

It appears more people are opting to spend a little more on their mattresses.

"I would love to lie down and sleep on it 'cause it contours to my back," Firth.
