Miami's Metrozoo Putting Poop To Good Use
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
So what do you do with 14 hundred pounds of elephant poop, 750 pounds of rhinoceros dung and 500 pounds of giraffe excrement a day? At Miami's Metrozoo they've come up with ingenious ways to recycle it and reduce the zoo's ecological foot print.
Tom Trump, Metrozoo's horticulture supervisor, said they began the project to recycle and reuse whatever they could last year. So far, it has saved the park over $20 thousand.
The excrements of elephants, giraffes, rhinos and other herbivores are recycled every day to save landfill space. Not only is it used as a fertilizer, it's also used to decorate the zoo grounds.
