MIAMI BEACH (CBS4) ― The family of a Miami Beach tourist shot and killed by police Sunday morning wants answers and say they have hired lawyers to investigate the police-involved shooting.

The Miami Beach police officer who shot Husein Shehada, from Virginia, has been placed on administrative leave after killing him early Sunday morning, right across the police station.

Miami Beach police Detective Juan Sanchez said they received a call around 4 a.m. that an armed man was walking in the area of Washington Avenue and 15th Street. An officer sent to check it out found the man at 11th and Washington. When the officer went to talk to the man, Sanchez said there was some sort of confrontation and the officer shot the man.

The family says they have not gotten an explanation as to why he was shot, and have hired an attorney to do so.

Hussein was rushed to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital where he died. Sanchez says what prompted the officer to fire at Shehada is now the focus of an internal affairs investigation.

In addition, Shehada's brother Samir was arrested and charged with battery. His bond is set at $1,500.

Now the family has flown down from Virginia to prepare funeral arrangements and get answers, according to CBS4 news partner The Miami Herald.

His cousin, Najwa Ghannam, questioned if police mistook him for someone else.

''How can an officer shoot an unarmed person to death?'' she wrote in an e-mail to The Miami Herald. ``They shot to kill. My cousin didn't stand a chance.''

Police have not released the name of the officer involved in the shooting nor have they said if Shehada had a weapon.
