No Swimming Advisories Posted At Several Beaches
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Swimmers are being warned to stay out of the water at several popular South Florida beach areas after testing showed an unacceptable level of bacteria in the water.
Broward County Health Department officials are advising people not to swim at the beach near Bahia Mar at A1A in Fort Lauderdale. Samples of beach water collected at this area did not meet recommended state requirements. All other beaches in Broward County tested satisfactory.
The beach near Bahia Mar at A1A will be retested this afternoon with new results available later tomorrow afternoon.
In Miami Dade, samples of beach water collected at Crandon Park Beach (Northern and Main Section) and Key Biscayne Beach Club did not meet the criteria for bacteria, as recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The water samples are being analyzed for enteric bacteria, both fecal coliform and enterococci, which normally inhabit the intestinal track of humans and animals, and which may cause human disease, infections, or illness. The prevalence of enteric bacteria is an indicator of fecal pollution, which may come from storm water run-off, wildlife, pets and human sewage.
Health officials say certain bacteria create unhealthy beach water conditions and may cause swimming-related gastroenteritis.
