Miami-Dade College Honored As "Best Neighbor"

MIAMI (CBS4) ― In 1914, the poet Robert Frost wrote "Good fences make good neighbors" in his poem "Mending Wall."

Today, Miami-Dade College has been honored as a "Best Neighbor" by Westfield State College in their annual "Best College and University Civic Partnerships'' survey.

MDC, the only Florida institution and only community college in the nation to make the list in the nation's top 25, was selected for its positive impact on urban communities, including community service and development, economic help, revitalization projects, cultural renewal efforts and economic assistance.

"Colleges and universities, as well as the towns and cities in which they are located, are now under severe economic pressures. The positive financial impact of higher education on local communities is well-documented,'' according to a statement by Even S. Dobelle, president of Westfield State College and creator of the survey and ranking project.

Other winners include the University of Pennsylvania, Tulane University, George Washington University, the University of Southern California, Emory University, and Carnegie-Mellon University.
