Family Unaware Home Burned While Away At Hospital

Firefighters Rescued Their Beloved Beethoven

SOUTHWEST MIAMI DADE (CBS4) ― Flames were shooting through the roof of a southwest Miami-Dade home at 15219 SW 23 Lane Friday morning when firefighters arrived, and there was a pet dog inside while the parents were at the hospital for a family member undergoing surgery.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue were told by neighbors that five-year-old Beethoven, the homeowner's Chow/ Labrador mix, was inside, but luckily the dog was in the yard at the time of the fire.

He wasn't injured, but he was agitated and confused.
Crews reportedly found him within minutes, treating him for suspected smoke inhalation with oxygen using a specialized pet mask.  Beethoven was released to his neighbor.

Impact resistant windows made it more difficult for fire crews to get inside and fight the fire, but at the same time officials believe they prevented the fire from spreading any further.

"We had to conduct a lot of forcible entry," said Lt. Eddie Ballester. "There was metal gates; the doors had to be forced; the windows were extremely difficult to force as well."

The fire was under control after approximately one hour, and the two-story 4000 square foot home was uninhabitable.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
