One of two Miami Dade police officers hit by a car while making a traffic stop in the southern part of the county has been released from the hospital.
The accident happened around 10 p.m. Friday when the officers were making a traffic stop at SW 152nd street and SW 112 Avenue, about a block from the entrance of Miami's Metrozoo. One of the officers was reportedly thrown about 40 feet as the car sped off. Both officers were taken by air rescue to Jackson Memorial hospital, one with injuries reported to be serious.
The officers, whose names have not been disclosed, arrived at Jackson Memorial Hospital by helicopter shortly after 10:30 pm. Ernesto Moreira of the Hammocks district station said the officers had been on the side of the road when they were hit. One officer received an injury to his leg, the other received an injury to his hand.
Police spokesman Roy Rutland said the officer who remains hospitalized underwent surgery on his leg on Saturday.
Investigators have not been able to confirm if the driver of the car that hit the officers was speeding at the time of the accident. According to the Miami-Dade Police Department the driver, who has not been identified, has been charged.
