Hot Again: Record High Tied In Miami Monday

MIAMI (CBS4) ― It's almost becoming routine for South Florida; the National Weather Service said another temperature record as tied Monday at Miami International Airport, hitting 95 degrees, a record set in 1992. If you think that's been happening a lot lately, you've been paying attention.

Starting May 1st, official temperature records have been broken or tied twice in Broward County, as measured at Hollywood Ft. Lauderdale International Airport, but Monday's record tying temperature marks the 6th time records have been met or shattered at Miami International Airport, and South Florida hasn't even hit the dog days of summer.

"It's a bit unusual to have this many records tested," said CBS4 Meteorologist Jeff Berardelli, "Especially in Miami-Dade where it's happened 6 times."

Even though Miami-Dade has seen more records tied or broken, it was Ft. Lauderdale that caught the most attention, when a 100 degree day June 21st tied the hottest day ever recorded, a blistering 100 degrees on July 21, 1942, almost 67 years ago.

While Miami and South Florida are considered by most people to be in the tropics, afternoon sea breezes and rainstorms help keep summer heat in check, with most summer highs in the low to mid 90's.
