Metrozoo To Host Amnesty Day For Exotic Pet Owners
Non-native Amnesty Day Event, March 21st, 10 AM to 2 PM
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Owners of exotic pets who can no longer afford to keep or feed them now have a new option instead of releasing them in South Florida.
On March 21st, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will be teaming up with Miami Metrozoo for the 5th annual Non-native Pet Amnesty Day. Exotic pet owners can turn in their unwanted animals to wildlife officials at the zoo, located at 12400 SW 152nd Street, no questions asked.
Like most states, Florida has restrictions on what type of pets people are allowed to keep and where they're allowed to keep them. Violating those restrictions can result in fines and other penalties.
During the amnesty day, exotic reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish and mammals will be accepted; domestic pets (dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets) will not be accepted. All surrendered pets will be examined by a licensed veterinarian and if they appear healthy, we will try to place them with willing, qualified adopters.

Amnesty Day is a free event and open to the public. Educational exhibits and live animals will be on display and experts will be on hand to answer questions about exotic animals.
