Police 911 Center Evacuated Due To Fire Alarm

MIAMI (CBS4) ―

Emergency operators at the Miami Police Department's 911 call center were evacuated early Sunday morning after something tripped the buildings fire alarm system.

According to Miami Fire Rescue spokesman Ignatius Carroll, phone operators on the 4th floor of the Miami Police Department headquarters reported hearing a strange noise then a boom. The fire suppression system activated, spraying Halon throughout the floor. Halons are gases used as fire-extinguishing agents.

As the alarm sounded, the building was evacuated and calls were routed to Miami Dade Police dispatch. Carroll said there was no interruption of emergency services.

Four of the phone center's operators were treated for breathing difficulties.

Fire rescue investigators say there was no fire and believe a faulty sensor in the Halon activation system may have caused the incident.  As crews clean up the 4th floor and replenish the Halon system, Miami Police 911 call center operators are working out of their back up center in Coconut Grove.
