Doctors Discover One Migraine Solution

Migraine Sufferers Are Offered Surgery To Remove Their Frowns In One Attempt To Stop Their Painful Headaches

MIAMI (CBS4) ― More than 29 million Americans suffer from migraine headaches, and they affect women three times more than men.  These debilitating headaches strike those between the ages of 15 and 55. Seventy to 80 percent of sufferers have a family history of migraines and less than half are diagnosed by their doctor.

A London clinic is offering a controversial treatment to remove muscles responsible for creating a frown as a treatment for migraines.

Research may suggest the approach may work for some sufferers whose headaches are caused by tension in the facial muscles.

Plastic surgeons started paralyzing the frown muscles with Botox - normally used to iron out wrinkles on the foreheads - some years ago. But the effect was only temporary as the Botox wears off after a few months.

Those whose headaches do not improve after a dose of Botox will not benefit from the surgery.

The British plastic surgeon, Professor Thomas Muehlberger, said the clinic has just launched the operation, which has already successfully carried out the procedure on 500 patients at a center in Berlin.
