Get The Most Bang For Your Buck At Local Gyms

WESTON (CBS4) ― It's a new year, and if you're looking for a new you, there are many things you can do to get into shape without breaking the bank. But saying it and doing it are two different things, especially when cost is a factor.

Gyms like the Sheinberg Family YMCA in Weston are offering deals. Debbie Hickey, a personal trainer at the 'Y' tells CBS4 Mobile Journalist Jim Robinson, "Health and wellness is the most important component of your lifestyle."

Debbie Weston has been hitting the treadmill and weights at the 'Y' since January first. She says it's about getting fit so she can keep up with her family. "Just having the energy to be able to run around with my daughters, she's playing soccer now," Weston explained.

Keeping in shape might cost more than just time, but she says how do you put a price on being healthy? Now, she's putting room into her clothes and into her family's budget. "It's easier if you just put it in there as one of your monthly expenses, right there with the water and electric bill."

Looking for a cheaper option? Head outdoors and take a walk around the many 'fitness parks' that offer a track to walk on. Many have stops along the way to give you a challenge. In Cooper City, there's Perimeter Loop. It's about a three-mile loop around a lake and on the way, they have signs that show your status.

No matter where and when you exercise, drinking plenty of water is necessary. "Hydration is, especially important especially here in Florida. It tends to get warm, you tend to get over worked if you're not careful," said Hickey.

Personal trainers say it's best to get a thirty-minute workout everyday, even if you have to break it up into ten-minute segments. A gym isn't necessary to work out and receive the benefits of a little movement.

Hickey offers a few good fitness tips.
-Take the stairs instead of the elevator
-Park far away from the front of the store
-Exercise in ten minute segments throughout the day
-Drink plenty of water
-Get plenty of rest
-Play with your children or grandchildren
-Walk regularly
