Emergency Contraception Under House Consideration
Emergency birth control pills would have to be offered to all rape victims, and the same drugs would be easier to get for any woman if a new bill circulating in the Florida House is passed.
The "morning after" pill can prevent pregnancy by preventing ovulation. It will not destroy an already fertilized egg. It's legal and available at pharmacies to adults as an over-the-counter medication, or to minors with a prescription.
But, some House members and advocates for victims of sexual assault say rape victims aren't always told the drug exists or aren't offered it, which creates the need for the bill.
The bill (HB 385) is currently before the House Health Quality Committee. A committee vote has yet to be scheduled.
