Smoke and flames from the fourth-floor unit prevented firefighters from at first entering Horizons West Condominiums at 8400 SW 133rd Ave. on Sunday; two people were on the balcony calling for help.
Miami-Dade firefighters at first couldn't enter because of flames at a doorway which trapped a mother and her eleven-year-old autistic son.
Thirty-five-year-old Lilliam Gomez told
CBS4 Reporter Marybel Rodriguez, how she recalled taking a nap when a fire erupted in her Kendall condominium over the weekend. Her child, Kenneth, who is autistic, just learned about fire safety at school, ran to her bedroom, arousing her to impending danger.
She remembered her son standing at the head of the bed, and said, "mama".Three bystanders, armed with extinguishers, were trying to put out the fire but were unsuccessful. A firefighter was finally able to knock the flames down just long enough for a second firefighter to hurry toward the balcony and rush the family to safety.
Both were transported to a local hospital for complaints of smoke inhalation, and have since recovered.
When it was all over, she said,
"My son never stopped saying, 'I love you, I love you'."Gomez has no insurance to salvage her condominium, and if there are a those who can help, please contact
