Cyclist In Grisly Rickenbacker Crash Identified
Police Say Weather, Possible Street Racing May Be To Blame
Investigators Seek Car They Believe Fled The Scene
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Police say a street race and poor weather may have combined to cost a motorcyclist his life in a grisly accident Sunday evening on Miami's Rickenbacker Causeway. The impact of the crash left the motorcyclist, identified as David Gonzalez Vega, 39, dismembered and police searching for the other driver in the race.
Investigators said Vega was headed west on the causeway about 7 p.m. when for an as-yet unknown reason, he lost control of the bike. It appeared the motorcycle was launched into the air before hitting the guardrail, where he was fatally injured.
"This is a very gruesome scene where speed and weather played a contributing factor," a police spokesperson told
CBS4 reporter Shomari Stone.
Vega was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators say he have been racing with a Nissan Altima or Sentra before the accident, and they believe he may have been talking with the driver of the other car.
Police don't yet know if the motorcycle and the car collided, but say after the motorcycle crashed, the driver of the car left the scene.
Police are looking for a teal or hunter green Nissan sedan, and are asking anyone with information about the accident to call
Miami-Dade Crimestoppers at 305-471-TIPS
