BSO: "Move Over" Or Pay The Price

BSO Will Begin Ticketing Violators On Thursday

FT. LAUDERDALE (CBS4) ― Florida drivers are being warned to "Move Over" or pay the price.

This week, June 23rd to June 29th, law enforcement agencies across Broward are taking part in a campaign to remind drivers of the Florida's "move over" law.

The week-long campaign will include three days of warnings (Monday – Wednesday) then zero-tolerance enforcement of the Florida's "Move Over" law.  The fine for a "Move Over" citation is $122.50 in Broward County.

Last year in Broward County, Broward Sheriff deputy Ryan Seguin and FHP Troopers Donald Jennings and Kimberly Hurd were all killed by cars in separate incidents on Broward highways. Statewide in 2007, there were over 200 crashes involving police vehicles stopped on roadways resulting in nearly 60 injuries.

For the safety of our law enforcement officers, firefighters and all the workers on the interstates and highways, we want to prevent this from happening again," said Broward Sheriff Al Lamberti.

Enacted in 2002 in Florida, the law states that drivers must move one lane away from the lane closest to the stopped emergency vehicle on an Interstate or highway with two or more lanes.

On a two-lane roadway, you MUST slow down 20 miles below the posted speed limit when the speed limit is 25 miles per hour or more. If the posted speed limit is 20 MPH or less, you MUST travel at 5 MPH.
