Voters Heads To Polls In Miami, Miami Beach
MIAMI (CBS4) ―
Voters in two Miami-Dade cities will head to the polls Tuesday in runoff elections that will decide who will fill Miami's District 4 seat and two Miami Beach commission seats.
In Miami, voters will cast their ballots on who will fill the commission seat vacated by Tomas Regalado who was elected Mayor. The runoff candidates are
Manolo Reyes, 65, a Miami-Dade public school teacher who has run for the commission seat on five previous occasions and
Francis Suarez, a 32-year-old lawyer and son of former Miami mayor Xavier Suarez. Both have included pictures of Tomas Regalado on their mailers even though Regalado has not formally endorsed either candidate.
The city of Miami has been rocked by one political scandal after another leaving three empty commission seats on the dais the lack of quorum prevents the remaining commissioners to pass any legislation.
Gov. Charlie Crist suspended Michelle Spence-Jones after she was arrested on a second-degree grand theft charge, while former Commissioner Angel Gonzalez resigned after an investigation revealed his daughter worked at a no-show job for a contractor that does business with the city.
Meanwhile, in Miami Beach, voters will decide who will fill two commission seats for group 2.
Maria Mayer is running against
Jorge Exposito, both who have not previously held public office.
In group 3, voters will decide between perennial candidate
Michael Gongora and
Gabrielle Redfern.
